A new ‘Crucial Crew’ child safety scheme in Dacorum for 2026 was off to a flaming good
start, at Hemel Hempstead Fire station for the borough’s year 6 children. All emergency
service and affiliated supporting agencies came together to provide a fun filled and thought-
provoking series of engaging and fun filled workshops and scenarios.
The ‘Crucial Crew’ scheme, aims to teach children about important issues that are often
overlooked by the curriculum, such as personal safety, staying safe online, knife crime, water
safety, (how to save a life whist keeping themselves safe), fire safety, home safety,
safeguarding, health & wellbeing, the pros and cons of gaming, and first aid (learning how to
save a life; DRABC; basic life support – CPR; (recovery position). making healthy choices,
avoiding peer pressure and how to understand emotions and have strategies to keep calm
and avoid conflicts.
Over Year 6 children (10-11 Year Olds) from local primary schools across the boroughs
took part in a series of interactive safety workshops with agencies including; Hertfordshire
Constabulary’s Local Policing Team, Hertfordshire Constabulary Knife Crime Team,
Spectrum Young People’s Services (CGL), promoting Healthy relationships,
Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue Service, East of England Ambulance Service, how to save
a life, Herts Boat Rescue, avoiding dangers in the water and safe steps to follow should an
emergency occur.
The event would not have happened without key sponsor, Dacorum Borough Council and
the very kind support of Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue, who provided the venue for free,
participated in the workshops and whose staff made us all really welcome and went out of
their way to ensure that the event ran smoothly – A special shout out to Dan Collier, Station
Commander and your entire team.
